Breakthru microbreaks are designed to counter the harms of prolonged sitting and sedentary behavior, boost cognitive function, sharpen memory and attention, foster a stronger sense of community and connection when shared with others, and help reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness. Breaking up periods of sitting with movement-based microbreaks improves strength, mobility, flexibility, and range of motion, while easing musculoskeletal pain. Evidence supports significant improvements in fear of falling, reducing fall risk among healthy older adults, resulting from guided, synchronous movement and breathing activities.

Regular exercise improves and maintains key aspects of cognitive function such as attention, learning, and memory, and just two minutes of movement has shown to improve cognitive function for up to two hours after the break. Breaking up prolonged sitting in sedentary adults has been show to improve cognitive function and decrease risk of dementia.
